WO127 is a set of 22 cardboard boxes housed in the National Archives. Each box contains a set of books or papers relating to a South African unit from the Boer War. The records represent a list of the men who served in that unit. While there is variation between the records, the information (usually) consists of:
  • Regimental number
  • Surname
  • Forename / initials
  • Rank
  • Date joined and place of enlistment
  • Date left and place of discharge
  • Previous and subsequent service

Notes

Not all the nominal rolls in the NA index are to be found in the boxes when these are retrieved from the archives eh Pietersburg Light Horse, Cape Police etc

Some nominal rolls are also not in the box referenced in the NA index.

The Reserves book contains a list of men, all of whom have been crossed out.

The information is usually presented on a double page of an index-tabbed book. The names, ranks and dates are usually on the right hand page. The prior and subsequent service on the left hand page. Many of the nominal roll images are of the right hand page only.

For reasons that aren't wholly clear, not everyone who served in a unit appears on the nominal roll.

Lastly, note that the units in the following list are in alphabetical order not in the order they appear in WO127.

This is an example of a right hand page. Some right hand pages on this site are from books where there is a left and right hand side. This example is a book that no service information on the left hand side and is from the CinC Bodyguard book. This image is reproduced under license from the National Archives.
