I was wondering if someone would mind interpreting all the abbreviations that accompany the entry on this website for Major W F Hawkins RE - I'm afraid they don't mean anything to me

I would be very grateful

Mike - many many thanks for that. I am indebted. Must say I didn't know there was a Belfast in South Africa, but I do now.

Will I be able to use that National Archives number to find a record for him?

Hello Andy

Those are references to the medal rolls, class WO100.

There maybe be a record for him in class WO76 - statements of services for Victorian army officers, but very many officers are missing. If he served in WW1 then there may be a WW1 officer's file - search the TNA catalogue "Discovery" using his name. Otherwise you will need to consult an Army List if you want a summary of his career.
