Apparently, some editions of Creswicke's "South Africa and the Transvaal War" have an "extra"; in that some contain group/unit photographs of local South African units. Some time ago, djb suggested that IL post the relevant pics. Unfortunately, a couple only were posted - and then (I think) there was a series of IL computer crashes, etc., etc.
The pics are noteworthy in that the officers of the named units/sub-units are named. Should any member desire a "blow up" of any named person in any of the following posts, please let me know and - bearing in mind the limitations of the dot-matrix original print - I will do my best.
here are the CT TG's No.4 (Stuttaford's) Coy and No.2 (Cleghorn and Harris's) Coy. (I assume the titles refer to businesses?).

That volume is rarely seen in the UK so it is great to see the pictures. Thank you IL.

The CTTG must have been a considerable size.

Very intersting pictures IL. Thanks for posting.

David - The CTTG must have been a large unit but BB&M doesn't list them among the Town Guard units and I've never seen or heard of a QSA to the them. I assume that, for whatever reason, they weren't awarded any. Maybe Cape Town was considered a 'safe' place well away from any Boer activity?

David,

I'm sure they would have created a length medal roll only for it to be send back with a harsh response of 'Not entitled'.

Hello IL,

Could you post the bibliographic details of this version of Creswicke. Where was it printed/published and in what binding?

Regards
Paul

Certainly! My Creswicke bear the publisher's mark of "T.C. & E.C. Jack, Cape Town and Johannesburg: D.E.M'Connell and Coy". Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co, at the Ballantyne Press, Edinburgh and London. Vol.I bears the date 1900, as do Vols. II, III and IV. Vol. V is undated; but contains a tipped in Publisher's note indicating the date March 1901. Vol. VI is dated 1901 and Vol.VII is undated.
My Creswicke Vols. I -VII have been bound in boards with leather spines. Most examples of Crewicke SA&TW found here are bound in pictorial cloth boards - and sadly often in poor shape. Some do have the pics in Vol.VII and some do not.
Hope this helps.
Regards
IL.
