I've been trying to find the Cape of Good Hope for J Murphy. Pte 3109 of the Cape Mounted Rifles. This metal has been lost to my family for over 40 yrs. the metal is listed on N.E.Medals web C.G.H. roll as known, so far no luck. The site said Basutoland bar it should be Bechuanaland according to his discharge papers.

Hi,

According to the defaulters pages in the Archives in Cape Town, 3109 belongs to one Michael Murphy !!

He is entitled to the CGHGS medal with the Bechuanaland clasp and the QSA medal with the CC, Wepener TVL and Wittebergen clasps. He enlisted in Cape Town on the 11th Sep 1897 at the age of 22. The Ref to his having the Basutoland clasp must therefore be a mistake !!

Thanks you Adrian his full name is Michael John Murphy. Along with trying to locate his CGPGSM is there anywhere I can find out about the Cape Mounted Rifles? I know he's commanding officer was Lieutenant Colonel E.H.Dalgety, if there is a unit flag or pendant, battle flag that the CMR had between 1897-1902?

I have and refer to the publication " Record of the Cape Mounted Riflemen" written by Basil Williams and published in 1909. It is a very useful publication which covers the years 1878 to 1909. Not to sure if there are many copies still available these days though.
