Hi Berenice,

An ornate and very well looked after memorial and in a nice looking park.
A fitting memorial, thank you for posting.

Cheers
Paul :)

...."Sir John French, in unveiling a memorial erected in Saltwell Park, Gateshead, to the local soldiers who fell during the South African war, said the most valuable asset the country now possessed was the certainty of an enormous fund of loyalty and patriotism, which permeated the whole British Empire. The opportunity was now in the hands of the citizens to see that the splendid regiments of auxiliary soldiers in the Northern counties were filled with recruits."
The Stamford Mercury, Friday 17th November 1905

The postcard was sent to Mr William Jackson, of 9 King Edwards Terrace, Tanfield Lea, Tantobie, postmarked N'CASTLE-TYNE, 2 P.M., AUG 23 10. Tanfield Lea is a village near Stanley, Co. Durham.

"Dear Farther,
....I think you will know this view.
............Louie.

There are three Louisa Jacksons that this could have been - one born in Newcastle in 1901, one in Lanchester in 1902, and the other in Durham in 1903. Was William Jackson a veteran of the war, or just a former resident of Gateshead?

Postcard by The Rapid Photo Printing Co., Ltd., London, E.C., which was founded c.1901, and was in liquidation by February 1910.
