Politics makes for strange bedfellows so they say.

Hereunder is a photo from The Star newspaper, Johannesburg dated Monday, May 10, 1909 wherein two arch enemies to wit Smuts and Jameson are walking together in casual conversation on the eve of the National Convention deliberations in Bloemfontein.

Were it that the present "mob" of politicos could bury the hatchet in so smooth a fashion..

It is a super image, but, it is important to bare in mind both men had "moved" on, their eyes were set upon the impending Union, moreover, the "Doctor" had just finished his period of office as the Prime Minister of the Cape, notwithstanding, it was certainly not such an unusual concept, when Charles Murray was Intelligence Officer Northern Transvaal, he exchanged long range rifle fire with a certain Christiaan Beyers, with the express intent of killing him, the two men subsequently worked together after Vereeniging, in the new Transvaal parliament, the former as District Commissioner, the latter, as the new Speaker.

Politics and politicians could be very different in those far-off days. Below is a 'Letter to the Editor' that appeared in Durban's 'Mercury' earlier this year. Present-day politicians in the same capital of what is now Kwa-Zulu-Natal would have had a disbelieving giggle (you know the one) on reading it.
