Hi all

I have just discovered that a recipient of a QSA for the Natal Royal Rifles was also issued with the above medal. There are numerous images and descriptions of it and wondered if anyone could tell me what a real one should look like!

Doug.

I have one of these medals. It is named to Corporal Isaac Poss of the Border Mounted Rifles. I do not have his QSA. Please let know if you need any other details.

Many thanks for this. There is a huge variation out there on offer, most of which have a hole drilled through and the ribbon loop going through that. Can you tell me if they were all named or not and any defining things I should look for to make sure it isn't fake. Were they all struck in the same place, as one on eBay states a makers mark?

Thanks.

Doug.

The medal I have is No. 295 in the Medal Yearbook. It is the official issue in bronze. The Medal Yearbook records that only 890 were issued, but that seems to be far too low a number given the size of the military escort of the procession, and the many other soldiers who were there for the Bisley competitions. There were contingents from everywhere in the Empire, as well as a huge number of British soldiers present . I will post a another picture later of a member of Natal's Bisley Team wearing the medal.

There is a designer's name in tiny letters below the bust of Queen Victoria, but it is too small for my failing eyes to decipher, even with the aid of a magnifying glass. Corporal Poss' name and regiment are engraved in block capital letters, and this may of course have been done locally. I have not been able to take usable pictures of the naming with my Stone Age camera.

I hope this helps.

As promised, here is the pic of a member of Natal's Bisley Team at the 1897 Jubilee wearing the Jubilee Medal.

Thanks Brett for posting the name list

This is the QSA to :

171 SERJT CA CARBUTT NATAL CARBNRS
I assume this is the same man as listed in your list as being one of the 6 Carbineers who were part of the Mounted Contingent, I would never have traced this without your post to the forum. Now to locate and purchase a medal, and although it won't be his medal, I would still like to add it.

Thanks
Jon
