Another Colonel who was aggrieved by his poor medallic reward was Henry Harford, who made a name for himself during the Zulu War, but thereafter, in spite of long service, he is remembered as a naturalist rather than a soldier. He spent most of his childhood years in Natal, where he became fluent in Zulu, which stood him in good stead in his first and only war.

In 1870, Harford was appointed an Ensign in the 99th Foot, but later resigned to join the Natal Native Contingent in the Zulu War. He finished that war back with the 99th. Thereafter he served with this regiment mainly in India. After the Boer War started, he tried in vain to use his previous life and service in Natal to get an appointment in South Africa. He ended his service in 1907 with a desk job in Britain, his only official medal being the S A Medal with 1879 clasp. He was appointed a CB in 1907, but saw this as 'too little, too late', since after 37 years in the army, he wore only one medal for 28 of those years.
