Good Evening Everyone......

J. HENDLEY or J. C. HENDLEY ?????

Here is one for the Sherlock Holmes members......

I just purchased a re-named QSA..... Now normally I would not touch a renamed medal with a 10 foot pole but it had a couple of interesting bars.....

When I checked his name in FMP it has only one listing 406 Corporal J. C. Hendley, Bethune's Mounted Infantry......

I checked his name in the roll that is here and yes he is listed under Hendley, enlisted 23-10-99 and discharged 9-12-99 so he served for a total of 46 days.....

The medal is privately engraved Joseph Hendley, 2nd Batt. Scottish Rifles......

1. Is he the same man ????? NO HE IS NOT......

2. Did people go from SA units to British units or could they????? I know that it went the other way Imperial to SA after time expired.....

3. Can someone who has access to Ancestry see if Joseph Hendley's documents are there and if they are see what if any previous service is listed......

Thanks

Mike

I think I have partly answered my own questions..... In digging more in FMP I find the following:

John Caufield Hendley

Regiment: Bethunes Mounted Infantry

Other regiments/units
Unit: served with Canadian Scouts, Rank: Unknown, Number: 38178 (Note according to my records he was Sergeant Major)
Unit: served with Robert's Horse, Rank: Squadron Sergeant-Major, Number: 9174
Unit: served with 1 Imperial Light Horse, Rank: Trooper, Number: 832

Records on Ancestry are in agreement with the information you have posted with regards to Units and enlistment and discharge dates. It is the Colonial Scouts roll which details his previous service in Robert's Horse, the Imperial Light Horse and the Canadian Scouts.

2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles played a very important part in the Natal campaign, there is no need whatsoever to buy a spurious medal, good originals are very common indeed.
