My understanding is that fixed suspenders on QSAs indicate either a later issue or possible repair. The fixed suspender is a feature of medals from the Great War onwards when cost became a more pressing concern. The second explanation is that the suspender has been damaged and replaced at some later time with what was most available at the time.

Can anyone put an approximate date on when QSAs with fixed suspenders were issued, based on information on issue dates from the rolls?

David that is a good question which I would like to expand to include the type where the suspension is attached to the exterior of the rim. As is seen on the South Atlantic Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. I have two, marked SPECIMEN and SP respectivly. Made after 1960 perhaps ? They both swivel.

Hello David,

I once owned a QSA\KSA pair and both medals had fixed suspenders. The medals were replaced (lost on active service) and according to the records reissued in 1922. This would have been, I assume, about the time that the majority of WW1 medals were being dispatched.
