Hi
Can any one tell me if it is unusal to find Vol on the rim of a QSA Medal I ask as I have a QSA Medal to a Volunteer member of the Shropshire L.I., Which reads
"7276 CPL W EDWARDS VOL COY SHROPSHIRE LT INFY

is this unusual as all my other volunteer medals do not read Vol Coy
Thanks
Philip

Thanks Mike for reply, I was not to concerned about the medal being dodgy just after years of collecting QSA's never had one before with Vol on, so happy with that, this medal came all the way from Bloemfontein
South Africa, and got it for a good price which as you know is unusal these days
Thanks again

The recipient would be a serving member of a Volunteer Battalion within the Volunteer Force movement, so they simply signed Short Service engagements to go off to South Africa and serve within a Volunteer Company with a regular battalion of their particular regiment, the medal would be unusual if the naming was engraved.
So in this case you have William Edwards, a twenty three year old Tailor who was a serving member of the 1st VB KSLI, who did just that and served in South Africa from the 3rd of March 1900 until the 9th of May 1901.
He was discharged seven days later and gave his next of kin as a certain Arthur Edwards of number 59 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London, South West.

You have actually got an engraved medal to a rank and file member of the Volunteers, I have never seen one!
You would expect them to be impressed.
