Kimberley Star 'a'

Arthur J. Attwood enlisted in the Cape Police on 22 September 1890 and served in the Bechuanaland Rebellion of 1897 with the rank of Corporal. He saw further service during the Boer War, and served with ‘C’ Squadron during the Siege of Kimberley. Commissioned Lieutenant in the 1st South African Mounted Rifles on 1 April 1913, he took part in the 1914 Rebellion from 1 September to 23 October 1914, and then during operations in German South West Africa from 18 May to 9 July 1915. Appointed an Acting magistrate at Otkiwarongo, South West Africa, in 1915, he saw further service as a Major with the Union Defence Force during the Second World War. He died in Pietermaritzberg in 1973 at the age of 102.

The long service group to Lt S V Bowden ( www.angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-...rley?start=216#82314 ) which sold at Spink for a hammer price of £2,800 in 2022 appears in the next Noonan's sale.

Charles Herbert Jarvis was born around 1873 at Adelaide in the Eastern Cape, and served as a Trooper with the Matabeleland Relief Force in 1896 and as Private in the 2nd Battalion, Kimberley Volunteer Regiment during the Boer War before taking civilian employment as a timekeeper. He served with the 7th South African Infantry during the Great War, before joining the newly-formed Cape Auxiliary Horse Transport Corps on 1 April 1917, and travelled to France aboard Euripidies, arriving on the Western Front on 23 May 1917. Jarvis returned home at the cessation of hostilities aboard Ingoma, disembarking at Cape Town on 17 July 1919.
