I have the QSA and the KSA awarded to 4053 Edward Alfred Williams 1st Bn Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. I got the relevant Medal Rolls from findmypast.

With the information I tried to get his service record but had no results from searches. I managed to find a transcript which had a note "Real name E.A. Prickler.

Using this I got a service record for 4053 E.A. Prickler 1st Bn Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. It records he married Catherine Gardiner Fraser Milne on 20-02-03 in Stirling. I have the civilian registry entry for her marriage. The spouse is Edward Alfred Williams Sgt. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

This guy seems to have changed his name from Prickler to Williams.

There is an entry on the attached page of his records for 21-04-98 which appears to be **Williams. and at the top of the page is a note "alias Alfred Williams"

Has anyone come across a similar change of name?
Under what circumstances was this possible?
What was the process for changing your name in the Victorian army did it involve the civilian authority?
I'd be grateful for any information.
