QSA to 6410 Pte. W. Allen, Gordon Highrs:

Private William Allen was born c.1877 in Thatcham, Berkshire, and enlisted for service with the Gordon Highlanders 9 February 1898 at Aldershot. Whilst serving with his regiment in the Second Boer War, he was wounded by Mauser bullet in the left arm 21 October 1899 at Elandslaagte where 5 officers and 27 men of the battalion were killed and 8 officers and 83 men wounded. He was discharged from further service 21 August 1900 at Netley, but later served throughout WWI with the Royal Defence Corps, being once again discharged 11 January 1919. He died 29 April 1945, at 5 Church Gate, Thatcham, Berks.

Casualties to 1st Devons; 3 Officers and 29 Other ranks (two died subsequently.

We saw this QSA three years ago when it sold at DNW for £500.

Provenance: Fred Rockwood Collection, Dix Noonan Webb, October 2014.

A. George served with the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders in South Africa during the Boer War, and was wounded at Elandslaagte on 20 October 1899.
