Denne | Henry William Denne | | Major | He was killed in action at the battle of Elandslaagte, October 21st, 1899. He was born in 1860, educated at Harrow, and joined the 75th Foot, January 1880, being promoted Lieutenant March 1881, Captain July 1887, and Major October 1897. He saw service in the Egyptian War of 1882, with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (medal with clasp and Khedive's star). He also served in the Soudan Expedition, 1884, as Transport Officer, with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and was present in the engagements at El Teb and Tamai (two clasps); also in the Nile Expedition, 1884-85, with the River Column under Major General Earle (clasp). He held the appointment of ADC in Egypt, April 1886, to September 1887, and at Malta, January 1888, to January 1889. He was afterwards Station Staff Officer (first class) in India, and was appointed DAAG, Bengal, from November 1895, until he rejoined his battalion to proceed with it to South Africa, in September 1899.
