BrownleeWilliam ThomsonHe was employed in the Chief Magistrate's office in Fingoland in 1876, and during the Galeka War he had charge of the whole district, and also served in the field. In 1877 he was appointed to the Chief Magistrate's office at Transkei, and was twice appointed Resident Magistrate of the Tsomo district and once at Willowvale. He superintended the removal of Galekas from Bomvanaland into the Willowvale district. During the Tembu rebellion in 1880 he had charge of a section of the Tembu-Fingo border, and was on active service in command of a Fingo levy; also acted as Staff Officer to the officer commanding the Colonial Forces in Transkei (medal and clasp). In 1882 he was appointed Resident Magistrate at Qumbu; appointed Resident Magistrate at Idutvwa in 1893, and at Butterworth in 1896. In the Boer War in 1899-1902 he was Lieutenant Colonel commanding the Fingo levies, subsequently commanding the Tembuland Field Force and the Tembu and Fingo levies.
