This unit was raised by Sir Charles Ross. The nominal roll says the established strength of the unit was to be "1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 1 Lieutenant and Quartermaster, 60 other ranks and 12 natives".

The QSA medal roll for Ross Machine Gun Battery is available at the National Archives in WO100/258. The title at the top of the page says 'Loch's Horse' and then 'Ross's Machine Gun Battery'.
