Uitenhage produced a Town Guard, District Mounted Troops and Rifle Volunteers.

Tylden says:

Raised in 1894.

The original strength was 135, in 1899, rising to 576 during the S.A. War, for service in which the unit was presented with a King's Colour. Most of the servicemen went to Marshall's Horse.

In 1911 a contingent was present with the S.A. troops at the Coronation, wearing the full dress of khaki-grey, with Austrian knot, oak braid, drab oak braid stripe to overalls, gold chevrons, Fusilier flash and white helmet. The field kit was khaki drill. Uitenhage Mounted Infantry and Mounted Rifles sent contingents to the Coronation in 1902.

In 1913 became a company of the Prince Alfred's Guards.
