Hi All,

I have been working on the nominal roll for Rimington's Guides / Damant's Hse for some time now and came across an interesting note in the medal roll. 207 Tpr J M Lang is noted as 'Died at sea on way to Australia'. A check of Oz Boer War Data confirms that he came from Australia and served in Damant's Hse. No other unit is mentioned. Nothing is mentioned about him passing away on the voyage.
Does any member have any info on J M Lang?
Thanks,
Jim

WO127 suggests that John Lang served in Damant's Horse from the 29th of January 1902 until the 21st of May, he appears to have been unfit upon discharge, he had originally enlisted in Durban, his medal and clasps are clearly shown in WO100/244.
I think the best thing to do next would be a careful search throughout WO126/35-38 in the hope his original paper will still be extant.

No entry in Deaths At Sea or Soldier's Effects.

Why do you think he served in a previous unit? He may have been a sailor turning up in Cape Town and fancied a fight, or simply a civilian in SA who decided in 1902 it was time to join up.
