Thanks for the photos of the silver tobacco tin.

Here is the badge of the Lincoln Regiment which explains the image above the inscription.

The Sphinx became the regimental emblem in 1801 after a long march made by the regiment in Egypt.

Thank you to all of you who supplied various bits of information. I now know that George Henry Radley wasn't my great-grandfather, unless his parents had a child called Wilfred after the 1881 census.

I've been able to find things out about him and his siblings from the Family History site but other ancestry sites charge money, so that's out of my reach.

I am so very grateful to all of you; I've had this box all my life and never known anything about it. Now I know a great deal, thanks to you. I'm touched by your kindness and generosity.

I can see 7 G Radleys in the 1911 Census. Do you know where he was living at the time?

I don't David. He was born in Gleadless, York, in 1877 but by the time he was 4, was living in Gainsborough. His father was James (b 1851.), mother Elizabeth Ann (1852). G H had siblings: Louis, Florence, Caroline and Lilly.

I'm not sure if the Family History site, run by the LDS/Mormon church has the 1911 Census online but they will have access to it via the ancestry centres they run I suppose.

My father (John Reginald Radley) was born in 1917, I'm not sure where but he talked about himself as a Yellowbelly, which I understood to be a Lincolnshireman and I knew they came from Gainsborough.
His Dad (my grandad) was Wilf, his Mum Edith.
So I'm fairly sure G H Radley isn't my great-grandfather. No idea where he fits in but obviously as I have his tobacco box, he must be kin
