Just reading through a newspaper clipping that a pte.Starkie sent to his mother who passed it onto the West Cumberland Times, and he states that he and his company were saved by a War Balloon.

I'll attach the pictures of his full letter for you to read.

As any one got any pictures or post me a link to read about the balloons that were in the war please.

Hi Mike......

I have never seen one but I have heard that there are QSA's out there that are named Royal Engineers, Balloon Service...... (Maybe an urban myth)......

Back about 3 months ago I posted a fuzzy photo of a balloon that appears to be taken in South Africa. Unfortunately the photo has no caption or date. My son obtained it in a lot of Boer War photos.

There are medals to men of the balloon section. They are named to the REs.
