Letter from War Office to Officer Commanding Cape of Good Hope District 9/7/14 refers to communication 68/SA/2883, War Office to G O CinC, South africa.

Application in special circumstances from Mr Justice Hopley, Supreme Court, for Queen's SA Medal therefore refused.

Title: Time limit

AG2/M/15472

Letter 4-6-07 From GOCinC South Africa to WO recommended 'that an early date be fixed after which no more applications from civilian employees for either King's or Queen's South Africa Medal will be considered. I may add that a similar time limit for application for the war gratuity was fixed by WO Letter No 079/Locals/4293 (F2) dates 12th March 1907." [079/Locals.4293, 12-3-07 limits payments of War Gratuity to 31-7-08, 6 years from date of Warrant]. (This letter 4-6-07 related to civilian employees now resident in South Africa "principally conductors and the growing difficulty of verifying their services).

The WO letter in reply dated 12-7-07 is as follows:

"Sir, with reference to your letter No CR/SA/A/3037/1 dated 4th ultimo wherein you recommend that an early date be fixed limiting the receipt of applications from civilian employees for either King's or Queen's South Africa Medals, I am commanded by the Army Council to acquaint you that no claims to the decorations alluded to, from civilian employees, should be entertained subsequent to the 31st Dec 1907. I am R H Brader, The GOC, South Africa, Army Headquarters, Pretoria."

The following communique was issued by C2 to the usual newspapers at Home and the principal papers in Canada, Australia, NZ, Cape Colony, Natal and ORC on 31-7-07.

Claims of Civilian Employees to the South African War Medals

It is notified that claims to South African War Medals from civilians employed during the late campaign will not be entertained after 31st December 1907.

Any applications for these decorations before that date should be addressed to the Secretary, War Office, London, SW accompanied by full particulars as to the nature of the duties performed, the Corps to which applicant was attached with the names of any Officers under whose immediate orders he served.
