On sale at Wallis and Wallis next week.

Picture courtesy of Wallis and Wallis

An interesting relic of the Siege of Ladysmith, 1899, being a small plum pudding wrapped in fabric, the attached label, with franked Victorian stamps, to “Miss Edith Burtenshaw” (? unclear) with a London address, and on the other side “One of the 3 plum puddings fired by the Boers into Ladysmith on Xmas Day 1899”, the cylindrical pudding approx 2” x 1¼”. Good Condition for age. Plate 4 Note: It would appear that the serving soldier attached a stamped label and addressed it to his girlfriend back home. It is a wonder it survived the trip.

Remarkable! Today the plum pudding would have been eaten by the postman soon after he cleared the post box.

Like Oliver Twist, many people here want more, but, unlike Oliver, they want it even if they do not need it.

Greed certainly, but actually little to do with food.
