The Royal Cornwall Gazette, 22nd February 1900, reported that six Liskeard men of A Company had been accepted for active service in South Africa - Corporal E. Cowling, Corporal J. Hoar, and Privates W. J. Barbary, W. Hooper, J. H. Partridge, and W. Prosser.

A Mr. W. J. Barbary crops up twice in the 1940s - firstly, organising a motor-cycle gymkhana and rodeo, at Carn Brea, between Redruth and Camborne, in aid of the R.A.F. Benevolent Fund (The Cornishman, 23.9.1948), and, secondly, as announcer at another motor-cycle gymkhana at Redruth (The Cornishman, 16.6.1949). Both events were by the Camborne-Redruth and Pendennis Motor-Cycle and Light Car Clubs.

The presentation was reported in The Royal Cornwall Gazette of July 4th 1901. Only 6 presented so a rare tribute. They were also given cheques for £3 6s 3d which were to be returned by the bank presumably as souvenirs. I wonder if any have survived.

My wife's grandfather was Private Frank Edney Cowling one of the Liskeard volunteers. We have his QSA. Pity we haven't got the Tribute Medal as well!
