William Patrick had received his medals the previous month, and presumably took them to South Africa..

"An interesting little ceremony was performed in the Mayor's Parlour at the Town Hall on Friday morning. Mr. William Patrick, of St. Helier's road, South Shore, a member of the Blackpool Division of the St. John Ambulance Association, who left the town for active service in South Africa, in December, 1900, and returned in July last year, is again going out to Durban to take up a situation as a joiner, and in anticipation of his departure, which took place on Saturday, he was formally presented by the Mayor with his South African war medal and one of the commemorative badges subscribed for by the townspeople. Mr. Patrick, who was accompanied by Dr. Molloy, Supt. G. Gosling, and First Officer Donnelly, was handed the mementoes by his Worship, who, in a felicitous speech, wished the young man every success in the position he is about to take up. The commemorative badge, which is of silver, bears as a centre-piece a prettily enamelled shield of the Borough Arms. Around the shield is the inscription "Presented by the Mayor and townspeople of Blackpool," and on the obverse side of the badge is "To Private Wm. Patrick, St. John Ambulance Brigade, Blackpool Division. - South African War, 1899-1900." The recipient suitably replied. Mr. Patrick carried with him the best wishes of the Division and local friends."

Thanks for that Mike. Do you know who got the top bid? Was it the bidder with 22 odd bids to his name?
