Attached is the photo (I hope) of my man!
If I was to guess a name it would be Gabriel, as that is what my Grandfather has written on the back, but no idea was to first name as we are having difficulties finding Gabriel's of our family in the Seaforths.
It''s so difficult this :(
But as I said, any clues may help us, so I'm grateful for anything you can give me.
Regards
Michelle

Hi Michelle, the ribbon is partly obscured by the ribbons from his glengarry. It looks like he is wearing just a single medal ribbon. I can't make out if it has white/pale edges or if the pale edge is a ribbon bar. Pale edges could point to 1902 Coronation medal but I would presume that the the red centre stripe would appear as very dark not light so have serious doubts. If the pale edges are actually the ribbon bar then it might be a QSA for the Boer War but I have doubts. It could be that the medal is the 1915 Star. The watered silk ribbon can catch the light creating the illusion of thin white stripes (look at the image in the Medal Yearbook 2011 for an example). With the 1914-15 Star having been issued before the BWM 1914-20 and the VM this might explain why he is wearing just the ribbon for a single medal.

Cheers,

Mark

Hello Michell,

I agree with Mark's comments. I was wondering if it is possible to see a higher resolution picture so that the details are clearer?

Hello

Have you tried searching the medal rolls on Ancestry?

Could be easier than guessing colours on a BW image.

Thank you ever so much for all of this. You have all been really helpful.
Meurig - we have tried Ancestry, but we are not sure who the soldier is so this makes it a little (or lot) complicated. We have also tried the National Archives which might be easier in some ways as the search engine is more user friendly and now we have some possible medal ideas then we could try with all our possible names and see what we get.
Mark and David, thank you so much. I think I will trawl through the National Archives, check the medal, pay my £2 for the full records for a few of my 'suspects' (my cousin and I have a few names we think it could be but it's all a bit of a long shot) and see what comes up.
Once again, thank you for your help, your friendliness to a newcomer. It's all much appreciated.:cheer:

All the best with your research efforts, Michelle,
Keep us posted as to what you find out. I'll be very interested to hear what the medal turns out to be.

Cheers,

Mark
