G'day All,

Can someone help me out please:

What is the correct abbrevition used on the QSA Medal for Bushveldt Carbineers, is it B.V.C. or BVC or none of these?

Thanks.

Diggerstan.

Diggerstan,

I have never seen a QSA to the BVC but I have seen a picture of the naming. I'm not sure if there were any variations to this style but I would guess not.

Thank you David, most helpful, any idea how many QSA's were issued to this unit?

I have read that only 1 KSA was issued to the BVC.

Stan.

Diggerstan,

In terms of numbers, there is an article by Andy Birmingham which said:

"Mr. John Lundstrom of the Milwaukee Public Museum, Wisconsin, USA, is the expert in matters relating to the issue of QSAs to the BVC. He has prepared a lengthy thesis on the subject, and has painstakingly produced a tentative list of QSAs from the BVC/PLH medal roll. One hundred and thirty-eight (138) names are included of which sixty (60) only served in the Pietersburg Light Horse. Men who served in the BVC received medals named to the PLH and vice-versa. There was some confusion by the issuing authority."

Evening All

Was lucky enough to acquire a small pile of medals that survived a house file. After carefully using a blow torch to soften the tin like alloy blob that enveloped the 2 QSA medals, and much cleaning I discovered the medal to 29 CPL E.W. FROST BUSH : CBNRS.

Entry from Bill Woolmore's book, The Bushveldt Carbineers and the Pietersburg Light Horse
Ethelred Wolseley Frost, Corporal No 29 (BVC); previous service with the Army Service Corps - Stock Riders. He enlisted in the BVC at Pretoria on 16th March 1901 - age 26, height 5'1", medium complexion, blue spot on left hand. NOK : mother, Mrs S.M. Frost, Charles St, Somerset East, Cap[e Colony. Discharged from BVC on 26th September 1901. He qualified for yhe QSA medal with clasps Cape Colony, OFS, Transvaal & SA1901

Once fully restored it will be a wonderful addition to the collection. Medal issued in 1907 and the unit naming slightly different from other examples.

The other QSA to the Natal Volunteer Ambulance Corps
Regards
Jon
