Richard Smerdon was born at Torquay, Devon, in 1871, and enlisted into the 1st Devonshire Regiment on 28 October 1888, having had prior service in the 3rd Battalion. He was promoted to Corporal in December 1892 and to Sergeant in May 1897. He served with the 1st Battalion with the Tirah Expeditionary Force in 1897-98 (Medal with 2 clasps), and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in in April 1899. He served with the 1st Mounted Infantry in South Africa from 20 October 1899 to 21 May 1903, being awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in September 1901 (Queen’s medal with 4 clasps, King’s medal with 2 clasps). Awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in 1907, he was posted to the 6th Battalion in July 1908, and was on home service throughout the Great War, being promoted Company Sergeant-Major and appointed Acting Regimental Sergeant-Major in January 1915. He was discharged in the rank of Temporary R.S.M. on 16 January 1920.

That is the third single TMI DCM I have seen. More than any other colonial unit. And this one wasn’t cheap but about right. One sold for 750 at DNW a couple of years ago so about the same with commission.

Alfred John Thafcher was born 2 April 1866 on Langford Farm in Burrington, Somerset, son of a farmer William (32) and Ellen (24). Alfred (18) moved to America in 1885 for about two years. He married Eliza Adelaide Willerburg in 1897. They had seven children in 17 years. He died on 5 June 1937 at the age of 69.

He was a member of the Natal Mounted Police and Bechuanaland Border Police Forces and was transferred to the Belingwe Field Force in Southern Rhodesia. The BBP participated in the First Matabele War (1893) and the Shangani Patrol (November-December 1893); and are reported to have been the first armed force to use Maxim automatic machine guns in skirmishes. The BB Police roll indicates he was entitled to bar; for Shangani ard Singuesi.

His service with the Army Service Corps during the Anglo Boer War was rewarded with a DCM, a Mention in Despatches and the QSA and KSA, both with no clasps. The QSA roll of Civilian Personnel of No. 22 Co. Army Service Corps, and Volksrust Sub. District notes that: “No. 33 Supt Thatcher, A. J. - Believed to have been in Siege of Ladysmith.". The KSA roll lists Thatcher as No. 30 Co A.S.C.

WWI Record Card shows Lieut A.J. Thatcher Mechanical Transport attached to S A.S.C. D o P 16.3.1915 to 12.8.1915. Trio despatched.
