My latest purchase is a two bar ( T.H., RoL) to 3060 Pte J Pearson South Lancs who was according to the medal roll, invalided home.

On checking my roll of those men who served in "D" Company, it transpires that he was one of the men who fought at Spion Kop! He also fought at all the engagements his regiment were involved in upto the relief of Ladysmith. The roll also confirms that the reason for him being invalided home was "fever".

This is my first post having profited greatly from being a 'passive user' for some time.

My interests are Elandslaagte,ILH, ILI, South Lancashire Reg.,

Both of the latter featured at Spion Kop but I had understood from this site that, unless he was a casualty, it is impossible to establish with certainty that a named soldier fought at Spion Kop. There is a fair chance that a member of the ILI at the time participated but since only two companies of the SLR fought the same assumption cannot be made for a contemporary server in the SLR and I have the medals of two such soldiers with the appropriate clasps - 3857 Rawlinson and 4276 Cheetham.

I envy you your certainty over Pte Pearson, congratulations!

Until I saw your post I had been unable to identify the two SLR Companies let alone the soldiers who served, Is your D company roll available anywhere to the general enquirer? Have you identified the second Company engaged and is its roll available anywhere?

I'm with you on that one Frank - I have long held the medals to William Walsh of the South Lancs and have been frustrated at every attempt to place him on Spioenkop.

I have always been given the same answer as that you provide - only two companies were in action and it's impossible to determine which two and which chaps belonged to which Company.

If Mark has the answers I would also be very grateful for a list or roll of the companies.
