I acquired an interesting QSA today - it's to 80 Pte. G.E. Bright, Imperial Light Infantry and has the clasps Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal and Laing's Nek.

My question relates to the casualty rolls to this unit for Spioenkop. I recall seeing them somewhere but would like to know if my man was among the wounded?

Strangely his attestation papers are to George Elliott Bright but it would seem his name was also George Elliott Burton (?) as this is how he has signed the form.

I attach a photo of both the medal and the attestation paper.

Regards

Rory

A hard fought QSA for sure.

It looks like it has been in that box for many a year. I remember many years ago trying to clean the clasps on QSAs without first removing the ribbon and the result was just as in the picture!

Just superb Rory, not an easy medal for a collector to find any more and of course, so much harder for the recipient to have actually earned in the first place, all for four and six a day!

Hello Rory,
Have you found any more on the issue of his surname, that is certainly not something you encounter every day with these men.

I haven't Frank - it's all very odd as his death notice in the Natal Archives also refers only to the surname Bright. Were it not for him signing himself as Burton I would be wont to consider it a "clerical error" but there it is!

See below for the Archival reference. I acquired the medals from the family but they only ever knew him as Bright. There is also nothing about a name change in the LG - not that I would expect one.
