Hi everyone. I'm very new here. I've spent years ( on and off) trying to find out more about my Great G.father. he was award the DCM sometime round about the Boer war. In his log book from that time his name is listed as 'William Henry smith ' a while later all the 'smith' is crossed out and he becomes 'William Henry darling' the last page of his log book has WH Smith....alias WH DarLing. My father and myself want to know why he received this medal, or anything...we don't know much about him sadly. Can anyone point me in a direction where I may find answers. There areally so many sites and everyone wants money...I just want to know what made my GG Father so brave...and potentially where he ended up after the war, where he is buried even. THanks in advance.

Some background would be useful.

No one called "Darling" earned a DCM in the ABW, there are four "W Smith":

Unit Rank Number Surname Forename
(King's Own) Yorkshire Light Infantry Sergeant 1395 Smith W
Elswick Artillery Volunteers Battery Sergeant-Major 2731 Smith W
King's Own Scottish Borderers Sergeant-Major 64 Smith William
Northumberland Fusiliers Sergeant 4222 Smith W
