Hello
Perhaps the Forum could help me again.

I have a pair of medals to 4311 Pte J King
India GSM to 4311 Pte J King 4th Dragoon Guards
QSA 4311 Pte J King 2nd Dragoons
Clasps CC. OFS. Transvaal.

My question is on the QSA was he entitled to the 1901/2 clasps?

Thank you
Nic

Nic,

His QSA (3) is verified on WO100/114p140. A note says '4th Dragoon Guards'.

I went through the supplementary roll and he is not listed. I cannot see an entry for him in the KSA roll either (WO100/302).

The service papers will confirm: www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?sour...ountry=great+britain

Good luck!
David

Just now I had a look on my Cavalry CD. To in addition to David's reply, "4311 Pte. J.King, 2Dragoons" is listed as "Wounded, Uitval Nek 11/7/00". He is shown in Palmer as simply " 4311 Pte King". The SAFF casualty list shows that 2D had a bad day on 11/7/1900, with a number killed and wounded plus many captured and later released. Stirling ("Our Regiments in South Africa") says that one Squadron of the Greys was left at Uitval or Nitral Nek with 5 Coys of the Lincolns. Owing to defective dispositions of the officer in command, the ensuing disaster saw the capture of nearly the whole squadron plus other captives.
Good luck with your further research.
Regards
IL.

Thank you, IL.

Are you thinking he was possibly invalided in that case? That would explain the lack of further clasps on his QSA. It is odd that the QSA roll does not note this but perhaps there was no set standard on this.

His return from SA will be in his papers so these will clarify the matter.

Yes, it is quite probable that "4311 Pte J.King" of 2D was invalided due to wounds. Otherwise, the lack of date clasps is hard to explain. I don't suppose there is any reason why a chap could not have been transferred from 4DG to 2nd D. Exigencies of the service and all that.
Indeed, I think the combination of IGS (possibly India medal 1895-1902 with clasp Relief of Chitral) and QSA to the cavalry is rather unusual - in my experience, anyway. Had I ran across the pair in my travels, it would not have remained unsold for long!
Best regards
IL.

Thank you to all for the info.
His India GSM single clasp is Punjab Frontier which agrees
with the roll.
I bought yesterday from Warwick & Warwick a QSA to
1899 QSA 3 clasps Cape Colony, OFS, Transvaal to 4482 Pte A.R. Hardy 3rd Dgn Gds top clasp sprung from carriage at right side, very fine. With copied rolls, also issued South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902 clasps off a later roll, transferred to 4th Drgn Gds.
I have carried out some WW1 research and found out he was with the 4th at Mons and taken POW
on the 24/8/1914. Looking for his 14 Trio medals and a pair of SA 01/02 clasps which are missing from the medal.
