Hi Brett and others

The lot of mortally wounded Boer War soldiers, waiting to die, must have been awful.

An extreme case is represented in my collection by the QSA to 3685 Pte W Jefferies, Grenadier Guards. He was wounded and trapped in the veld fire at Biddulphsberg on 29 May 1900 and only died of burns some 4 weeks later on 25 June 1900. I cannot even try to imagine what agony he went through.

The trio to Pte J Dawson, LNLR, which is being auctioned by Neate Auctions next week.

The Star has, as Frank predicted in a post a few weeks a ago, the 'C' hallmark.

QSA (3) DoK Ofs Tr (4669 PTE J. DAWSON, 1st L. N. LANC: REGT.)
KSA (2) (4669 PTE. J. DAWSON, L. N. LANC: REGT.)
Kimberley Star 1899 - 1902 with 'C' hallmark.

Hello David,
From my experience, stars originally claimed by members of this regiment tend to have a "C" hallmark, but, the only time that I feel it to be "right" is when the recipient had bothered to have his named engraved onto it.
Of course anybody can just make up a group or pair anyway. :(
Kind regards Frank

Frank,

It is not often that you see engraved Kimberley Stars and I was trying to think of these how many I had seen to LNLR. Not many I would imagine.

I would quite like to see the naming of this QSA to Pte P Dreyer, KTG as the rim looks very thin. He also served in the KLH and earned DoK, OFS & Tr.

Hello David,
It might be okay, but, always best to be on your guard as far as naming goes, I cannot remember the last time I actually bought a Kimberley Star, let alone a named one, although, I think it might have been one to a member of the Kimberley Regiment, I'll have to have a look tomorrow, my bed time now so I will bid you goodnight!
Regards Frank
