I have long been interested in Steinaeckers Horse and so was pleased to buy a medal to Surgeon Captain W G Joynt of that unit. The medal was accompanied by a silver medallion issued by the Dublin Hospital Football Union inscribed , Won by Duns, 1900, W G Joynt. Also a gilt and enamel medallion which was designed to be suspended from a brooch pin which was enscribed, Dance 1898. This latter medallion is to me a bit of a mystery . The design is of a castle with a lion , a 'D 'and a harp floating above the battlements. I guess that it is probably also from Dublin Hospital. It was made by West and son. Can anyone help in identifying this medallion and adding to the biography of Captain Joynt ?
Many thanks
Mike

Morning Mike,

A very interesting set of items. It is very nice that the medal is named to Steinaecker's Horse too.

Let's hope someone can help with the mystery medallion.

Best wishes
David

A little more information.

He is on the roll of the 2nd Warwickshire Regt (WO100/170p14) as civil surgeon with the clasps CC OFS & Tr. A note says 'To Hospital, Komati Poort, 13 Mar 01'

Steinaecker's Horse roll (WO100/276p95) lists him as Surgeon Captain, same three clasps and a note saying 'Civil Surgeon, Howick'.

Hi David,
That is a great biography. He sounds to have been quite a character.
Thanks

Yes, 'a difficult man to deal with in many ways' says quite a lot.

It is a shame the author did not know very much about his military service in the Boer War.

Best wishes
