I think that all of those medals have a Defence and not a Relief clasp, the roll says yes under relief, not defence, I also think if I was in Ladysmith right now, it would take me only a little longer to drive to Harrismith as it would to get down to Estcourt?
Estcourt was not defended by Sir George White.

I agree with you. I think the clerk that wrote up the roll just put the yes in the middle of the column.

Lets see if I can find any info on the man and then we will know

Okay, well a brief look at his brother Fredrick shows the relief added on the Durban LI roll WO100/260 page 183, there you all, tends to prove it.

Frank

Concerning the 'Relief'/'Defence' puzzle on the roll that you showed .......

I see that the RAMC Major who signed it was "late of the ????? Convent Hospital, Estcourt". Would medical orderlies etc, who served in an Estcourt hospital, or indeed elsewhere in Estcourt, have been entitled to the 'Relief' clasp?

Regards
Brett

PS I was once a patient in this hospital, but after the Boer War, although I shared a ward with a Boer veteran of the war.

Sgt C B Lloyd, Natal Guides, whose QSA was shown earlier in post #11975 may be one of the men shown in the photo below. (From 'The Siege of Ladysmith in 120 Pictures' by Henry Kisch)
