The information missing from the description:

He was killed in action at the battle of Colenso, December 15th, 1899. He was the son of Percy Schreiber, of the Royal Scots. He was born December 1873, and entered the Royal Artillery, from the Lancashire Artillery Militia, July 1895, being promoted Lieutenant July 1898. He proceeded to South Africa with his battery in October 1899, and served with the Natal Field Force. At the battle of Colenso Lieutenant Schreiber was instantaneously killed. He was mentioned in despatches, LG, February 8th, 1901, (See Captain Goldie)

Doug,

It was catalogued as an innocuous RFA QSA but was far from that.

Its a shame you were unsuccessful.

The QSA to Tpr. G. J. Manton, Colonial Scouts)

Gilden Joseph Manton, a Farmer from Thornybush, Thornville, enlisted on 29 November 1899, aged 19 years. Served as Trooper 172 in the Colonial Scouts. Discharged (reasons unknown) 16 December 1899. With copied notes and roll extract - the latter lists him as ‘Maunton’, shows entitlement to the clasps, ‘Relief of Ladysmith’ and ‘Natal’, and bears the comment, ‘Condr. A.S.C. (not traced)’.

I was able to purchase the QSA to 5238 Pte Peter Hayden 1st South Lancashire Regiment at the latest DNW sale. I sold the medal some 20 odd years ago along with all my other South Lancs QSAs. Hayden is confirmed on his papers as having been wounded at Spion Kop.
