That is in no way a stupid question. If you have a look at this page, you can see an example of how the medals are named on the rim.

The Pretoria archives will hold the form he completed to apply for his medal. This is where the information about his service was sourced.

Researchers can obtain a copy for you at a cost, for example Audrey (details in Contacts on the top menu).

The medal was sold at DNW last month. In cases such as this, it is not uncommon for family members to write to DNW asking them to forward an email to the buyer asking whether they would consider selling the medal back to the family.
