Does the Smithfield mean that he served in the Smithfield Commando?????

If so is there a way to find out what and where the commando served?????

Thanks

Hi Mike

Yes it does.

I would start by getting his ABO application papers, they show in which commandoes he served, dates, injuries, capture etc.

I will get this one for you.

I am no expert on Boer commandoes, but a quick look shows that Smithfield took part in the Battle of Biddulphsberg on 29 May 1900, under Kommandant J Potgieter.

There are also mentions in De Wet's "Three Years War" like this extract:

"The first, some five hundred men in all, consisted chiefly of Smithfield burghers under Commandant Swanepoel, of Yzervarkfontein, but there were also some Wepener men amongst them. I gave General Froneman the command over this party, and ordered him to proceed without delay and attack the small English garrison at Smithfield.
Christiaan Rudolf De Wet – Three Years’ War"
