Hello David
I found the ABO medal with a dealer in the Cape recently and request whether any Forum member can confirm where Burger C J Wheeler came from?
Alternatively which commando he served with?

Hello Evyn,

There are two Wheelers on the ABO Roll.

Cornelius Johannes Wheeler a Burger with General Cronje's Commando and
Richard Thomas Wheeler a Corporal with the Comdt Potgieter Commando. (Sounds like he could have been an "Engelsman")

Good morning, I have been researching the Wheeler family in South Africa for the last 20 years. Some corrections to these two Boer soldiers:
1. Burger Cornelius Johannes Wheeler was in fact James Cornelius Wheeler, born Uitenhage 13 Nov 1853 (although his grave states birth as 10 Oct 1862). He was married to Susanna Cicelia Carolina) Susara (Susanna) Cecilia BARNARD and his parents were Frederick (Antonie) WHEELER X Ellen Armena (Ellenor Herminia) LAWRENCE
2. Richard Thomas Wheeler was in fact a Boer, but a descendant of James Wheeler, 1820 British Settler. This is the family names, a tradition we still keep. There are a few possible candidates for your Richard Thomas Wheeler, namely:
1. Richard Thomas Wheeler born 14 Oct 1853 Smithfield
2. Richard Thomas Wheeler born 23 Sep 1872 Farm Belmont Dist Wepener (my GG grandfather) who was a teacher and fought as Boer, where he was Secretary to various Commandants and fought in several battles.
3. Richard Thomas Wheeler born 28 Nov 1873
4. Richard Thomas Wheeler born 15 Nov 1880 Wepener
I have been able to obtain quite a lot of information, including the war diary of my GG Grandfather
Trust this would assist
