PickwoadE HLieutenant ColonelColonel Edwin Hay Pickwoad was born on 1 June 1883 and commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1873. He served in Afghanistan with D Battery, 2nd Brigade, and was shortly after promoted Captain. He was promoted Major, Commanding Artillery in South Africa, in 1889. When the Boer War broke out, as Lieutenant-Colonel, he commanded the Artillery at the battles of Talana, Dundee, Farquhars Farm, and at the Defence of Ladysmith where he was severely wounded. For his gallantry and distinguished conduct on these occasions, Pickwoad was four times mentioned in despatches and created a CMG.
