Dickman | Stanford | 18023 | Farrier Sergeant | No known Company. Served in 25th Btn IY
He was born on 7 Feb 1878 in Brighton Rd, Surbiton. He grew up in the area and at some point made his way out to South Africa. He was attested at Cape Town on 1 Dec 1899 for his first tour of duty with the South African Light Horse and ended up a Corporal - his number was 24232. He was known to all and sundry as Stanford. He went back to the UK after his time expired on 15 Jun 1901. His father was ill and died whilst Stanford was in Kimpton (the family having moved from Surbiton by then), during the 3 or 4 months he was home. He then re-enlisted at St George's Barracks, London in the Imperial Yeomanry on 1 Nov 1901 and his number this time was 18023. This time he made it to Farrier Sergeant. He was discharged on 2 Jul 1902 at Elandsfontein in the Transvaal.
Thereafter he became a hotel manager in Johannesburg,(his father having been in the business before his death, having run the Jolly Miller on Millbank St in London for several years and then a pub at Kimpton), got married in 1904 and had one son (same names, also however, called Stanford), and then died on 26 Jan 1906, cause unknown as no records have been found. He is buried at Braamfontein Cemetery.
