GarstinA AColonelBorn Aug 30, 1850, at Edinburgh, and is son of Charles Garstin, of the Bengal Civil Service. He was educated at Cheltenham Coll, and RMC, Sandhurst, and joined the 57th Regiment in 1871. He commanded the 2nd Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment from 1893-98, and a Regimental District from 1898-1900. Colonel Garstin's war services include the Zulu War in 1879, when he was present at the action of Gingindhlovu and the relief of Eshowe. He also took part in the pursuit of Cetewayo after Ulundi, and served in the operations of Clarke's Column (medal with clasp), the Egyptian Campaign in 1885, as DAAG of Lines of Communications with Sir Gerald Graham's Expeditionary Force (medal with clasp and Khedive's Star), and the SA Campaign in 1900-02, when he went out on special service in Feb, 1900. He acted as AAG of 2nd Div. from the relief of Ladysmith until Dec, 1900, and shared in the operations of the 2nd Div., AIG Western (Mafeking Kimberley line), Jan to March, 1901. He was Commandant of Port Elizabeth from March to Aug, 1901, and commanded the Kimberley District in succession to Major General Pretyman, from Aug, 1901, to July, 1902 (twice mentioned in despatches, QSA with four clasps, KSA with two clasps, CMG). Colonel Garstin retired from the Army in 1903. Recreations: Shooting, fishing, and sketching. He married, Sep 13, 1904, Isabel, daughter of Colonel Chas. Noble.
