GroveEdward Aickin WLieutenant ColonelBorn at Dolguog, Machynlleth. He was educated at Bedford School and joined the 2nd Royal Cheshire Militia in 1873, transferring to the 97th Regiment in the same year. He passed Staff College in 1883; was DAAG and QMG Canada from 1885 to 1887; DAAG Eastern District 1881-88; commanded the 2nd Battalion of the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment 1896-1901, receiving the brevet rank of Colonel in 1900, and was AAG and CSO Scotland in 1902. Colonel Grove has seen much active service, commencing with the Transvaal War in 1881. He was all through the Egyptian Expedition of 1882, being present at Kassassin and Tel-el-Kebir, and acting as Assistant Provost Marshal to the 2nd Division (medal with clasp, Khedive's star, and brevet majority). He served in the Sudan Expedition of 1884-85 as DAAG and QMG (clasp), and in the Boer War commanded his regiment from 1899 to 1901, and afterwards commanded the sub-district of Krugersdorp (mentioned in despatches, CB, and medal with 4 clasps). He married, in 1887, Georgina, daughter of Reverend George Atkinson of Kettlethorpe, Lincs.

GroveErnest WilliamCaptainGROVE, ERNEST WILLIAM, Captain, was born 17 February 1870, second son of W R Grove, MD, of St Ives, Huntingdonshire. He was gazetted to the Royal Artillery 27 July 1889, becoming Lieutenant 27 July 1892, and Captain 9 October 1899. Captain Grove served in the South African War, 1899—1902, taking part in operations in the Orange Free State, February to May 1900; operations in Orange River Colony, May to 29 November 1900, including actions at Bethlehem (6 and 7 July); Wittebergen (1 to 29 July) and Caledon River (27 to 29 November); operations in Cape Colony, south of Orange River, 1899-1900; operations in the Transvaal, December 1901 to 31 May 1902; operations in Cape Colony 30 November 1900 to December 1901. He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 10 September 1901]; received the Queen's Medal with three clasps; the King's Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 27 September 1901]: "Ernest William Grove, Captain, Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He was invested by the King 15 December 1902. He was promoted to Major 14 November 1905, and Lieutenant Colonel 30 October 1914. Lieutenant Colonel Grove married, in 1906, Grace, youngest daughter of James Macdonald, of Bombay, and they had one daughter.
