BlackettAlgernon CareyLieutenantHe was killed in the engagement at Syferfontein, about nine miles north of Vaal Station, on February 8th, 1902.  He was the youngest son of Captain E A Blackett RN of Wylam, Northumberland. He was born May 6th, 1873, and educated at Bedford Grammar School and Wellington College, also at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.  Lieutenant Blackett was in South Africa when war was declared and joining Bethune's Mounted Infantry, served with it till March 1901.  He was then transferred to the South African Constabulary, and while with that force, was severely wounded on October 12th, 1901, but on recovering rejoined and served until his death.  He was awarded the Queen's medal with six clasps and the King's medal.
