Robert Davis Chilcott was born in Lindfield, Lewes, Sussex. A Joiner by occupation, he attested for the Royal Engineers on 12 April 1889, aged 31 years, 10 months. He served overseas in Egypt, September 1890-October 1894; Malta, October 1894-November 1895 and South Africa, July 1899-April 1910. For his services during the Boer War, Chilcott was mentioned in Sir Redvers Buller's despatches (LG 8 February 1901). Awarded the LS&GC with gratuity on 31 December 1907. Attained the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant Foreman of Works in May 1903. Discharged to a pension after completing 21 years on 11 April 1910.. DNW Sep 2014 £270 | Royal Engineers |
