Frank, He's a family member. We know he served in South Africa because of his QSA medal and his absence from the 1901 census. He also apparently went on to enlist during WW1 were he was gassed, his death certificate from 1935 also states he was an army pensioner.

Okay, then no problem whatsoever, simply look at the details on the QSA, and then take it from there, the rolls are in WO100, surviving papers are in WO96, WO97, WO363 and WO364, you should note a manual search in the latter two is not possible with only the digital folio being available.

That would be fantastic Frank, if we had his QSA. All we have is his photo with him dressed in it !!

Okay, in that case, my original advise would be the obvious way to go, simply check every man with that particular name, I take it you know beyond reasonable doubt that the photograph is of the gentleman in question, but, of course, if you don't actually have the medal, you cannot know if it was his.
