Neville - I agree with Rory, FANTASTIC. You have added a vital bit more to my overview of 10 of "my" Smethwickians whose QSAM was adorned with the "Defence of Ladysmith" clasp. Strangely the patriarchs of Smethwick recognised both Kimberley & Mafeking in their naming of streets but not Ladysmith. The scorecard for "my" 210 Smethwickians is RoL = 27, DoL = 10, RoK = 7, DoK = 0, RoM = 0, DoM = 0. David.

Maurice's maps are the cat's pyjamas. But occasionally he gets it wrong, for example the position of the Machesters on Caesar's camp is not in the right place, I suspect: Machester fort is visible on Google maps at -28.58743, 29.77141 - it's about 100m due west of the Burgher Monument - an Maurice has it 1.3km to the east. The gun emplacements of the 4 guns of the 42 Btty are, however, perfectly sited on the map. They're also visible on Google Maps, four crescentic walls centred on -28.58842, 29.77309.
I'll be there in a fortnight - can't wait...
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
