Great minds.....

Thanks for sharing this fine tribute to Capt.Meyrick. My Dad was a 15 year old 'Private' in the ranks of the 1st Battalion Gordons on that fateful day. With cries of Majuba ! and fixed bayonets they chased 'Johnny Boer' from the hill. Interesting that Doorkop was also the site of the Jameson Raid misadventure. ( Living in Canada now but I grew up just over the ridge from Maraisburg.) Regret that I never visited the cemetery.

I doubt that I have ever come across a person with such a close personal link with the ABW! Thank you for your post, and I hope that it will be followed by many others about your Dad's experiences.

The only Boer War campaign photo I have of my Dad. Somewhere on the veld. Likely Eastern Transvaal 1902. Note their kilts have been sewn into trews. Much more comfortable and certainly a positive move though the dark colour was not much use as a camouflage.
