Westmount was a small town on the island of Montreal, Quebec, and is now an affluent enclave of the city.

Burnett Kitley-Kenny Snider, was born in Brantford, Ontario in 1883 and served as a Private in the 10th Canadian Field Hospital in South Africa and was awarded the QSA (3) CC Tr SA02. The Hospital, which numbered five officers and 56 other ranks, arrived in South Africa in February 1902, and was based at Vallbank, but a section accompanied the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles into the Western Transvaal.

He was subsequently employed as an advertising manager, he was also a member of the Active Militia and, on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Ottawa. Assigned to Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, he went out to France and was wounded on 15 February 1915. Having then been commissioned as a Lieutenant, he was again wounded on 19 December 1916, and ended the War at the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp. He was discharged in January 1919.

Mike,

Just found this which may be of interest.
This article in the Montreal Gazette of 10 Mar 1903 describes the presentation of tribute medals to 14 volunteers in the Victoria Hall, Westmount on 9 Mar 1903.
Barton is not on the list, so must have received his at an earlier ceremony. Indeed, the Mayor notes that thirty-four Westmounters had served in South Africa, and that twenty "had already received at the hands of the municipal authorities similar tokens of the appreciation of the town".

I see 32 Private Burnett K. SNIDER, 10th Canadian Field Hospital, is listed. His medal was sold through DNW on 25 Mar 2014 (see above).

Neville

I will continue looking for any mention of earlier presentations.

Here we go:

Winnipeg Tribune, 19 Apr 1901.

Seven medals were presented by Colonel Sam Steele on 18 Apr 1901. Unfortunately no names are given, but as Barton was invalided in September 1900 and discharged on 9 Jan 1901, it seems possible that he was one of the recipients on this occasion. The engraved "1901 1902" dates on his medal, which replace the raised dates of the "1899 1900" issue, might however suggest that Barton received his belatedly in 1902.
