My husbands grandfather and great uncle Edward Hollis & George Hollis served in the Bushveld Carbineers 1901-1902 before joining Cape Police force. Would like to know if the medals they received would have been Queens medals? Look forward to an answer. Barbara

Barbara,

In the link that Mike provided, you can see the two men listed on the nominal roll on the first page of the Hs: George Herbert and Edward Arthur. George signed up first and Edward the day after.

264 Trooper George Herbert joined the Bushveldt Carbineers on 14 May 1901 and served to to 13 Feb 1902, latterly in the Pietersburg Light Horse. One roll suggests he subsequently served in the Field Intelligence Department (but I can see no evidence of this). He earned the QSA with clasps Transvaal, SA01 and SA02. His medal was issued on 16 Apr 1913. The SA01 and SA02 clasps were sent to Edward on 6 Jun 1913.

265 Trooper Edward Arthur joined the Bushveldt Carbineers on 15 May 1901 until 16 Dec 1901, latterly in the Pietersburg Light Horse. Edward then joined the Natal Volunteer Composite Regiment, serving between 24 Jan 1902 and 31 May 1902. His medal with clasps Transvaal, SA01 and SA02 was issued on 11 Sep 1913.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Another query would the Hollis brothers travelled under their own passaged and pay their own way to South Africa as they joined in the field or would they have joined while in Australia. Barb

Barbara,

There was a note on one of the rolls about potential previous service in the Victoria Mounted Rifles for Edward but there was no evidence to suggest he did.

Do you know if there are shipping records between Australia and South Africa that you can consult?

Kind regards
David
